Hmong Last Names
Les Noms de clan ou de famille chez les Hmong
Hmoob Cov Xeem

Hmong last names are mostly clan surnames. Traditionally, they used to be monosyllabic. But since the years of 1970, some changes have been introduced such as plurisyllabic names (See below for some examples). Some lineages and/or households recently invented the plurisyllabic names. These groups chose the respective first name of one of their ancestors, usually the one of the grandfather or great grandfather of the household, as the new last name. The plurisyllabic name is only known and used in the Laotian, Thai, French or American official record. Between, the clan still serves to identifying clan belonging. Thus, in term of practice of taboo or exogamic rule, two members of the same clan, even having different written last names, cannot marry each other.

Les noms (de famille) sont la plupart du temps des noms de clan qui sont traditionnellement monosyllabiques. Mais depuis les années 1970, des changements quant aux formes syllabiques ont été introduits (voir ci-dessous pour quelques exemples). Les noms plurisyllabiques sont récemment inventés par des lignages et/ou des maisonnées. Ces groupes ont choisi le prénom respectif de l?un de leurs ancêtres, en général celui du grand-père ou de l?arrière-grand-père, comme le nouveau nom de famille. Et ce nom est seulement utilisé et connu des registres officiels laotien, thailandais, français ou américain. Par conséquent, en terme de pratique de tabou ou de règle exogamique, deux membres appartenant à un même clan, même s?ils portent des noms de famille différents à l?écrit, ne peuvent pas se marier entre eux.
