Zhan Xiao is a scholar living in the province of Guizhou in China. She is the director of the Institute of Culture of Ethnic Groups (or Minorities) in Ghizhou. She got her BA in Literature.

Sha has published numerous articles and books on Miao culture and literature in Chinese language. Leur strong interest focuses on oral songs and ethnographic research within the Miao ethnic groups. Her last book was on the village "Sheejieng" (SibCiab) where she collected Miao women's oral stories. This study got one of the most prestigious award  in China (see picture).

Zhang Xiao, by her extensive and lifetime devotion to study oral stories and history of the Miao groups in China, remains a rare figure of Miao female scholar. Exploring knowledge in her lonely path as a Miao woman intellectual, showing her simplicity, permanent curiosity and research commitment, Zhang Xiao reveals to be an exceptional figure among the Miao/hmong intellectuals of her time.

In 2002-2003, Zhang Xiao was a visting scholar in the United States to study Hmong American Women. She got a grant from the Ford Foundation.
