| CONTEMPORY ISSUES The Need of Organic Foods Kev toob kas noj zaub mov tseem tseem Food Why do we need organic food? The reasons are mainly medical because organic foods are healthier. Non-organic foods have fertilizers, genetically modified genes, chemical toxicity and/or growth hormones. Instead, organic food is all-natural. You may find other people eat organic for philosophical purpose. For me, it is more a question of "cuisine". Of course, having working with a health program, I am aware of health problems related to nutrition such as breast cancer or diabetes. No one wants to have cancer or cardiovascular diseases. We need to change our eating habits. I personally came to organic foods after a serious awareness. Here is my story: Each time, when I travelled back in California after staying in France, I found food very poor in taste and meat is too fat if I compare American food with French food. The boiling chicken soup has more oil then good juice for example. I have to boil the chicken in two times, the first time to withdraw all the oil, then the second time to keep the juice that doesn't taste good anymore. In fact, meat or fruits do not sound like meat or fruit I ate in France or in Southeast Asia. An apple doesn't smell "apple". Beautiful and round peaches are just good for eyes, but not for mouth. Could eyes only eat, and stomach starve? Certain not, but it is difficult to digest! I want true meat from animals that take time to grow up, smelling fruits that come to maturity according to season, milk that smells freshness, ... like I used to have in France. I always remembered my meeting with an apple that smelt so good in the train that took me to my hometown in the South of France. Next to me, there was a neighbour eating that apple. And I envied him a lot. This scene haunted me lot. It helped me to find a best way to eat healthier and with better tastes too. Months passed during my first years in the US, and I gained more than 40 pounds that I cannot lose at all even if I ate less. I did exercise but it was impossible to go below the first loss 10 pounds. If I stop exercising, in two to weeks, I just regained these 10 pounds. Life was very miserable. When I go back home in France, in the space of two months, I always lose about 20 pounds very easily without doing exercise. That made aware that food in the US is somehow wrong. Too much growth hormones rBST for animals? Too much toxic products? Thus, eating healthier food becomes a necessity. If you don't know how to find organic food, you may find only expensive products. After searching through different places, I found out that I could get organic food in some well-know place. For example, I buy my milk at Food Max. I purchase my butter and other things at "Trade Joe's" where there are mostly organic foods (and some of the good bread too). For more difficult products hard to find, I do not have other choices than to go to "Whole Food" which is a quite expensive place. Since my decision to try to eat the most in organic foods, my health is improving; my weight goes down, and my cuisine smells truly better. I feel at home in France. I do advise you all to eat "organic". It is not more expensive than others if you know the good place to find products. TOP Copyrights © 2005 Kao-Ly Yang All rights reserved. |
