H
ow could I do to become a good researcher? The answer will be "be a good ethnographer" in reliably collecting and analyzing data. Interesting and rare topics may help to earn distinction. But the methodology remains the core of quality in research study because methods of collecting and analyzing data do influence findings.

As many of you, young Hmong people, I came to study Hmong culture and language for more ideological purposes: I wanted to preserve my language and culture. My training as Linguist and Ethnologist helps me to approach my culture with a better understanding and quality in the academic world.

I would like to advise you all to reliably do research. It is crucial for a long-term development of the study of our culture, language and history because we all need to bring our Hmong community at the university level where it will be recognized for its richness and specificity that will be academically transmitted to all the interested people at the same time it will enhance our understanding of our past, present and future by pursuing in depth research and comparative studies..

Below is the powerpoint presentation done for The Association of Hmong Students at the University of California at Los Angeles on May 7, 2005 where I shared my experience, as an ethnologist, facing the challenge to produce reliable research at the same time to survive as a woman in a patriarchal society and to always keep distance within the Hmong community to safely question Hmong issues as a native researcher.
